Countable athletically related activities (CARA) include any required activity with an athletics purpose, involving student-athletes and at the direction of, or supervised by, any member(s) of an institution's coaching staff and must be counted within the weekly and daily limitations.

  • Maximum CARA hours during the playing season
    • 4 hours per day
    • 20 hours per week
    • 1 day off per week

  • Maximum CARA hours outside the playing season
    • 8 hours per week
    • 2 days off per week
    • Max 4 hours a week on team and skill related activities (except Football, 2 hours max for Football)

Daily and weekly hour limitations do not apply during preseason practice before the first day of classes or first contest, whichever is earlier; limitations also do not apply during vacation periods as listed on the official SFU Calendar.

All CARA outside the playing season are prohibited one week prior to the beginning of the final exam period through the conclusion of final exams. In addition, a student-athlete may not participate in any CARA outside the playing season during any institutional vacation period (e.g., Christmas break, spring break, holidays, summer, etc.).

Practice may not be conducted at any time after competition, except between contests, rounds, or events during a multi-day or multi-event competition (e.g., double-headers in softball or baseball, rounds of golf in a multi-day tournament, etc.).
