Simon Fraser Storms Back to Win 4th in a Row

BURNABY, BC ---

Saturday night, The Simon Fraser University Women's Basketball Team triumphed over the visiting Saint Martin's University Saints in a ten-point second half comeback by a final score of 71 to 67.

Jessica Jones got Simon Fraser off to a hot start, and was active on both ends of the court, as SFU took an early 13-8 lead through 5 minutes of play. Saint Martin's responded in the backend of the 1st quarter with physical post play, and as the quarter reached an end, the visitors had things tied up at 17.

The 2nd quarter started off back and forth at both ends of the court, and Jessica Jones continued to lead the way again for Simon Fraser offensively. Things were still tied up midway through the second frame, but Saint Martins would break the game open late on in the half.

SFU struggled to deal with the Saints down low in the paint, and also missed a number of open looks on the offensive end. By the end of the 2nd quarter, Saint Martins had created a ten-point lead for themselves, holding SFU to just 3 points in the final 5 minutes of the quarter. At the half, the visitors led 39 to 29.

Simon Fraser got off to a better start defensively in the second half, and quickly closed within 6 points. By midway through the third, SFU had worked the Saint Martin's lead down to just 4 at 46-42. Saint Martin's would respond late in the third quarter however, and took a seven-point lead to the final frame at 55-48.

Simon Fraser one again worked hard to close the lead down in the final frame, and with 5 minutes left, it was only a two-point game at 60-58. From that point on, Simon Fraser caught fire offensively, and the second of back to back three's from SFU by Claudia Hart put the home team up 64 to 60. Minutes later, Tayler Drynan hit another three for SFU, and Simon Fraser was up 5 with just a minute remaining.

Saint Martin's responded with a three-point shot of their own down the stretch, but ultimately, Jessica Jones picked off a Saint Martin's pass to help close out the game, and SFU held on for a thrilling, come from behind victory by a final score of 71 to 67.

Leading the way for SFU was Tayler Drynan with 24 points and 8 assists, Jessica Jones added 21 points, while Ozioma Nwabuko had 5 rebounds. Simon Fraser's 12 for 26 three-point shooting was crucial, and Simon Fraser also did a very good job taking care of the ball, only turning it over 9 times.

Up Next, SFU takes on Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho on Jan 16th. Game time is set for 6:30PM (PT).
