SFU Can’t Solve Seawolves Fast-Paced Offense

BURNABY, BC --- Saturday night in the West Gym, the Simon Fraser University Women's Basketball team fell to the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves by a final score of 87 to 66. The game also marked SFU's PINK NIGHT initiative, in which all proceeds of the 50/50 draw and silent auction were donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Seawolves demonstrated why they have just two losses so far this season, as their relentless tempo and bench scoring helped vault them over Simon Fraser by a 21-point margin.

Simon Fraser's best spell of play was undoubtedly in the 2nd quarter, where they outscored the Seawolves 20-18. Claudia Hart led the way in the first half for SFU with 10 points, and at the break, SFU was down just seven.

Unfortunately for SFU, they simply couldn't keep pace with the visitors in the second half, as they struggled to take advantage of open looks, going just 3 for 21 from three-point range. Anchorage outscored SFU by twelve points in the third quarter, and at that point, the game was out of reach for the home team.

Despite the loss, Simon Fraser had three players reach double figures, as Claudia Hart (16 points), Ozioma Nwabuko (14 points) and Tayler Drynan (11 points) led the way for SFU.

On the other end of the floor, the Seawolves saw 10 players sink at least two baskets, demonstrating their balanced scoring approach.

With the final result, UAA moves to 9-1 in the GNAC, while SFU moves to 7-3. These two teams will meet again in Alaska on February 20th at 8PM.

Despite the loss, SFU remains in a share of third in the GNAC standings. Up next, SFU hosts Western Oregon on Jan 30th at 7PM in the West Gym.
