SFU Bests Visiting Cavaliers 69 to 58

BURNABY, BC --- Saturday night in the West Gym, the Simon Fraser University Basketball Team claimed their second victory of the week over the visiting Concordia University Cavaliers by a final score of 69 to 58.

Things didn't start off great for Simon Fraser, as the visitors opened the game up on a 7-0 run, and held an imposing 20-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Simon Fraser, in an attempt to cut into the CU lead, picked up the pace of their offense in the second quarter, and slowly but surely, SFU got themselves back into the game, down just 36-33 at halftime.

Leading the way for SFU in the first half was Jessica Jones with 16 points, while Claudia Hart continued her solid play, earning 2 steals in quick succession which helped close the lead near halftime.

In the second half, Simon Fraser started off red-hot offensively, and a 11-0 SFU run to begin the third quarter would prove crucial to the final result. At the end of three, SFU had completely flipped the script on CU, now holding a 55 to 48 lead.

In the final quarter, SFU continued to play strong fundamental basketball, while Concordia's shorter bench proved to be a factor, as with just seven players in the rotation, fatigue became difficult to manage. Simon Fraser utilized their bench down the stretch and held on comfortably for a 69 to 58 win on home court.

Statistically, Jessica Jones was huge again for SFU with 21 points, while Tayler Drynan was solid yet again with 14 points of her own. Off the bench, Sophie Klassen had a monster game on the boards, positing 9 rebounds and 6 points.

Up next, SFU will travel to Lacey, Washington to take on Saint Martin's at 5:15PM on February 6th.
