LACEY, WA --- Thursday night, Simon Fraser claimed victory over Saint Martin's University by a final score of 65 to 55. The win leaves Simon Fraser with an impressive 10 – 3 record in the GNAC, while Saint Martin's falls to a 4 – 9 record.
Saint Martin's University and Simon Fraser appeared to be equally matched at the start of Thursday night's game. Saint Martin's took a short lead before Simon Fraser's
Kendal Sands tied up the score at 10 - 10 seconds before the buzzer ended the first quarter.
Simon Fraser began their lead in the second quarter with a run that included two jumpers by
Sophie Klassen.
Majella Carey brought the score to 16 – 10 with a fast break. Saint Martin's responded with a 10-point run that brought them ahead at 20 – 16. The half finished with a leg up for Saint Martin's at 29 to 20.
SFU entered the third quarter prepared to take the fight to Saint Martin's. The team worked to get back on top, and succeeded in the last minute of the quarter with successful free throws by
Jessica Jones and a layup by
Majella Carey.
Simon Fraser doubled down to finish the game in their final quarter with a 19-point run. Simon Fraser was on fire, as they surged ahead 61 to 44. The game's outcome was looking optimistic for Simon Fraser with 3 minutes left. With two more successful layups, the team celebrated their well deserved 65 – 55 at game's end.
Sophie Klassen was a game standout adding 15 points (a career-high) to the board in addition to picking up 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Jessica Jones also played well with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 1 block.
