BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser men's golf team placed second – just a shot out of top spot – Tuesday at the Chico State Wildcat Classic in Marysville, California. The tournament began Monday at the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club with two rounds, before it concluded today with 18 holes.
Locked in the tight three-way battle, the Red Leafs finished the event with a score of 19-under-par 845 (275-286-284), a stroke behind host Chico State (Calif.) and one ahead of Sonoma State (Calif.).
The 845 is the program's fourth-best 54-hole total since Golfstat records commenced for the 1993-94 season. SFU's 19-under result ranks second on the Red Leafs' list of 54-hole scores vs. par since 1993-94.
The team's opening-round totals of 275 and 13-under on Monday are both tied for the second-best for the Red Leafs since the start of the Golfstat records.
"I'm proud of the team and how hard they fought this week," said SFU head coach
Matthew Steinbach. "We leave this event with mixed feelings – content with the team score and posting our second-best all-time total vs. par; but disappointed with the second-place finish. We had three teams battling to the very end, unfortunately we came up one shot short. There's something special happening with this team and we're excited to get back at it next week at Monterey Bay."
Sophomore
Kyle Mayner had his best tournament as an SFU golfer, tying for seventh at 7-under 209 (65-72-72). On Monday, he fired seven birdies and 11 pars for an opening-round 7-under, the second-best round vs. par by an SFU golfer since 93-94. His 65 is tied for the second-best 18-hole score in that time span. In total, Mayner recorded 13 birdies in two days.
Bailey Bjornson was a shot behind Mayner in a tie for 10th at 6-under 210 (72-68-70). He led SFU with 14 birdies over three rounds. The sophomore's 68 on Monday was one off his career best.

Senior
Jordan Bean tied for 19th after finishing at even-par 216 (69-77-70). He had nine birdies at the tournament, and his score of 69 in Round 1 matched the lowest score he's ever signed for at the university level.
Freshman
Aneesh Kaura was 11-over for SFU, tying for 52nd at 227 (73-82-72). Kaura posted four birdies over three rounds.
The Red Leafs have one more tournament remaining on their fall schedule. The team will compete at the Otter Invitational, hosted by California State Monterey Bay, next Monday and Tuesday in Seaside, California.
