WAIMEA, Hawai'i – Freshman
Izzy Ferguson fired a final round, school-record 69 and the SFU women's golf team recorded the second lowest round in team history in a historic day of golf at the Dennis Rose Invitational on Saturday at the Hapuna Golf Course.
Ferguson was 21st after round one but shot the lowest round of the tournament on Saturday. Her round of 3-under par 69 included six birdies and one eagle on the par 72, 6,029 yards course. Her 69 tied the SFU school record shared by Emily Leung (2019-20) and Belinda Lin (2018-19).
Ferguson, who opened the tournament with a 76 in round one, finished at 1-over-par 145 and tied for fifth behind Brady Turnquist of Biola University who successfully defended her crown. Turnquist is the first player ever to win the individual title more than once.
Turnquist duplicated her first-round score of 1-under-par 71 which catapulted her above the previous day's leader Arnie Taguines of University of Texas Permian Basin.
SFU freshman
Meera Minhas also finished top 10 with rounds of 73 and 74 to finish 3-over par 147.
As a team, the No. 50 ranked Red Leafs finished tied for third behind champion No. 23 ranked Cal State San Marcos (583) and second place No. 45 ranked Point Loma (596). SFU tied for third place with Sonoma State, both with 597 totals, in the 16-team field.
SFU's second round total 292 ties the second lowest team score in history. It included Ferguson's 69, Minhas' 74 and rounds of 74 from
Shirin Anjarwalla and 75 from
Kassie Muanyam. The team shaved off 13 strokes from round one to round two and climbed one spot on the leaderboard.
"The strategy for the tournament was to play aggressively and be smart in troubling areas," said first-year assistant coach
Kat Kennedy. "We are a little fatigued from being on the road for a week but they played hard till the very last hole."
"I am so proud of them for the perseverance they showed on the golf course and the support they provided each other. This will give us big momentum into the 2023 spring season."
Anjarwalla recorded rounds of 78 and 74 to tie for 31st. Anjarwalla was 8-over-par 152 in the two-day tourney.
Anaya Bhandal tied for 48

Kassie Muanyam was tied for 58
th.
During the tournament Ferguson had seven birdies while Minhas and Bhandal had five each.
After a week and two tournaments in Hawai'I the Red Leafs will head home and prepare for their spring season which will begin Feb. 27 at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout in Alameda, Calif.
