BURNABY, B.C. – Sophomore opposite
Brooke Dexter recorded 29 kills Friday as Simon Fraser split its two matches at the Seaside Invitational Tournament, hosted by Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego. SFU began the day with a four-set win over California State San Marcos (25-18, 14-25, 25-17, and 25-22), before falling to Cal Poly Pomona in five sets (24-26, 16-25, 25-18, 25-23, and 15-8).
Dexter led SFU with 13 kills against CSUSM, while
Jocelyn Sherman had a dozen. The sophomore outside hitter recorded 18 digs and four service aces, both team highs. Sophomore middle
Abby Willett had a solo block and seven block assists. Sophomore setter
Serena Gentile had 34 assists. Freshman libero
Ava Khademi had 17 digs.
Trinity Barr had 18 kills to lead the Cougars. Two Barr kills in the fourth set put CSUSM in front 20-17, but SFU responded with a match-finishing 8-2 run that included four Dexter kills.
In the third set, SFU held a slim 13-11 edge, but established control by winning eight of the next nine points. The team was helped in the surge by a pair of Sherman aces, a kill each from Gentile and Willett, and four San Marcos errors. SFU had just three attacking errors in the third set, in which the team hit .400.
The Cougars had a big stretch of their own – 16-3 – in the second set to go ahead 22-11, and eventually close out a 25-14 win.
Willett set the tone in the opening set, recording a solo block, and three block assists. A half-dozen Vosloh kills paced the SFU offence as the team won 25-18.

In a back-and-forth opening set, SFU led 19-18 but fell behind 23-20. The team rallied to level the score at 23-23 on Vosloh and
Miriam Jauhiainen kills that bookended a block the pair came together for. CPP won the next point, but SFU took the last three on a kill by sophomore outside hitter
Hanna Kolof and a pair of Vosloh service aces.
SFU hit a sparkling .500 in the second set en route to a nine-point win. Head coach
Gina Schmidt's team had a dozen kills and just two errors in 20 attacks. A 7-1 run pushed SFU's led to 17-9.
However, the Broncos replied by taking the next three sets and the match. The Broncos led 23-17 in the fourth set, and escaped after SFU cut its deficit to 24-23.
After a Vosloh kill got SFU to within a point at 8-7 in the fifth set, CPP ended the contest with a 7-1 run.
SFU will conclude the Seaside Invitational Tournament with two more outings on Saturday, against San Francisco State at 9:30 a.m., and host Point Loma Nazarene at 5 p.m.
