BURNABY, BC --- On Thursday night in the West Gym, the Simon Fraser University Women's Basketball team collected a win against the visiting Western Oregon University Wolves by a final score of 68 to 59.
Western Oregon made the game a defensive struggle, especially in the first half, and Simon Fraser found it difficult shooting the ball effectivley in the opening twenty minutes, going just 6 for 30 from the field. Despite their struggles, solid free throw shooting and team defense helped keep SFU within close proximity to the lead. At the half, SFU found themselves down five points at 30 to 25.
Simon Fraser came out looking like a different team in the second half, as the home side upped their intensity at both ends of the court.
Leading the way for SFU in the 3
rd and 4
th quarters was
Jessica Jones, who put up 17 points on 5 for 10 shooting, as the home team surged ahead by as many as 11 points in the final quarter.
Despite having found good success early on scoring in the paint, Western Oregon struggled to score consistently as the game went on, and Simon Fraser ability to force turnovers proved to be costly for the Wolves, as they coughed the ball up 25 times on the night, which led to 33 SFU points.
To give a sense of the difference between the first and second halves for the home team, Simon Fraser's 24-point tally in the final quarter was only one point short of the 25 they had scored in the first half.
Notable contributors for SFU on the night were the aforementioned Jones who finished with 25 points, while
Ozioma Nwabuko added 8 points and 12 rebounds.
Tayler Drynan also had 14 points and 5 assists.
Up next, Simon Fraser hosts Concordia University on Saturday night in the West Gym at 7PM.
