BURNABY, BC --- On Thursday night in the West Gym, The Simon Fraser University Women's Basketball team took a decisive victory over the visiting University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks by a final score of 93 to 61.
In a back and forth first quarter, the Nanooks did a good job keeping Simon Fraser in check from the perimeter. But after a late quarter three point shot from SFU's
Jessica Wisotzki, Simon Fraser took a narrow lead at 16-15 headed to the second frame.
In the 2
nd, the game continued to be characterized by good defense and hustle from both teams, although Simon Fraser would eventually pull ahead. SFU surged midway through the frame to take a three-point lead at 25-22, and at that point Simon Fraser began to truly find their scoring touch.
Jessica Jones led SFU on an impressive late-quarter run, and as she began to hit her shots, SFU gained a considerable advantage. At the half, Simon Fraser held their largest lead of the night up to that point, up ten, at 37 to 27.
Simon Fraser continued to roll in the second half and built up a considerable lead over the course of the third quarter. SFU simply couldn't be stopped in the paint as well as on second chance opportunities, and took a 67-44 lead to the final frame.
SFU stretched their lead above thirty points in the final quarter, and some of SFU's depth players saw good minutes, including Freshman
Grace Killins who looked strong off the bench with 8 points and 100% shooting from the field. The game would end by a final score of 93 to 61.
Leading the way for SFU was
Ozioma Nwabuko with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while
Claudia Hart added 15 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.
Head Coach
Bruce Langford added his thoughts after the big win:
"I thought we struggled from three but still rebounded pretty well tonight. We got quite a few more shots than them because of that, and we also didn't turn the ball over much after the first few minutes."
Up next, Simon Fraser takes on the nationally ranked University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night in the West Gym at 7PM. Saturday will also be "PINK NIGHT", with all proceeds from the event going to the Canadian Cancer Society.
