SFU Ends Alaska Trip with a Big Win

Fairbanks, AK --- Simon Fraser left their time in Alaska on a positive note crushing the University of Alaska Fairbanks 76 – 52 in Saturday afternoon's game. 

Simon Fraser got off to a rough start though, with Fairbanks taking the lead straight out of the gate, two baskets ahead. Simon Fraser's Ozioma Nwabuko tied up the score twice with back to layups at 11-11 and 13-13. The quarter ended with Fairbanks putting up a shot that placed them ahead at 15 – 13.  

Alaska continued to stay a few points ahead throughout the second quarter until Simon Fraser pressed hard to gain a 7-point run that included a jumper by Sophie Klassen, a 3 pointer by Georgia Swant, and 2 successful free throws by Majella Carey.  This put Simon Fraser ahead 33 – 29 at halftime.  

The lead gave Simon Fraser a newfound confidence as they entered the third quarter with an uninterrupted 7-point run putting them 11 points ahead.  Simon Fraser did not let up as they continued to press hard ending the quarter 17 points ahead of Fairbanks at a score of 61 – 44. 

Simon Fraser was in a good spot to finish what they started in the last quarter. The team propelled their lead further, jumping 26 points ahead in the final minute of the game.  Simon Fraser claimed victory at a score of 76 – 52, 24 points ahead of Alaska Fairbanks.  

Simon Fraser excelled in their field goal accuracy finishing 30 out of their 67 shots, for 44.8% total shooting. Alaska Fairbanks attempted 71 shots, with only 21 of those successful; for just a 29.6% accuracy from the field. 

Simon Fraser's win was led by and Georgia Swant and Ozioma Nwabuko scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Notable performance include Claudia Hart with 9 points and 4 rebounds, and Jessica Wisotzki contributing 10 points. 

Next up, Simon Fraser will play their second to last game in Bellingham, WA against Western Washington University on February 25 at 5:15 PM.
