Al Kristmanson (1980-1984) learned to play basketball in Ladner, BC, taking his high school team to the provincial championship in 1979, and a year later he came to SFU.  Al enjoyed 17 and 19 win seasons his first two years with the Clan, and in his final season at SFU, he led the team in scoring.

After graduating from SFU, Al played professionally in New Zealand and for the Canadian national team. A classic late-bloomer, Kristmanson earned a position on Team Canada in 1987, and became one of the stars of the Canadian team at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, Korea. Canada, which placed sixth, nearly upset the top-ranked USA. At halftime the Canadians were up 42-40, and kept pace until the end when the U.S. team rallied with three-pointers to pull ahead. Kristmanson led Canada with 25 points in that game.

After his playing career, Al returned to the Clan as an assistant coach with the men’s program. He was also a broadcaster for the Vancouver Grizzlies during the NBA team’s time in Vancouver.
