Julia Howard (2003-06) was a champion middle distance runner at SFU, winning 10 individual NAIA championships, seven relay championships and she was an integral part of four championship teams.

Howard had a remarkable junior season in which she won six national titles. Howard began the year winning the NAIA cross country championship, was named Outstanding Performer at the NAIA Indoor track and field championships after winning three races, and then she concluded the season winning two national titles at the NAIA outdoor championships. She was named Lorne Davies Female Athlete of the Year.

As one of SFU’s first track stars from Newfoundland, Howard set an incredible standard. “She showed what was possible for women in the middle distances,” said her coach Brit Townsend. “People saw it, they believed it, and athletes have followed in her footsteps ever since.”

Howard went on to represent Canada at the 2007 and 2009 Summer Universiade.
