Quarterback Dave Syme led the football team to a perfect 8-0 record in 1970, the only undefeated season in school history. That year SFU’s schedule was ranked eighth nationally in the NAIA in terms of difficulty.

SFU opened with a 21-12 win over Portland State and rolled to a 61-6 win over UBC – the most lopsided win in Shrum Bowl history.

The team was coached by Lorne Davies, and featured 13 seniors. SFU set records for total offence and rushing with Glen Colwill and freshman Terry Bailey in the backfield. Twelve players went on to play in the Canadian Football League.

The 1970 season fell in the middle of a 13 game winning streak for SFU, which included a victory in the last game of 1969 and the first four games of 1971.
