Nadine Caron (1988-92) is internationally renowned for her advocacy for health care support in rural, remote, northern and Aboriginal communities in Canada. As a student-athlete, Caron was part of legendary coach Allison McNeill's first recruiting class which launched the program on a decade of success, leading SFU to its first-ever appearance in the NAIA Championships. As a student-athlete, she won more than 20 major academic awards and she earned the Shrum Gold medal as the top undergraduate student at SFU.

Caron is the first female First Nations student to graduate from UBC's School of Medicine, again as the top student. While completing her surgical residency, she completed her Masters of Public Health at Harvard. Caron continues to distinguish herself as an outstanding surgeon, researcher, mentor, educator, patient advocate and community leader and she has passionately helped shape Canada's health agenda.

In 2019, SFU named its Top Scholar-Athlete Award after Caron.
