Eugene Gyorfi joined SFU in 1982, already an accomplished swimmer who competed for the Canadian Olympic and Pan American Games teams in 1980 and 1979.

With SFU, he led the men's team to a 1983 NAIA National Championship, while earning several individual titles. He was a three-time NAIA champion in 1983, winning the 500 freestyle, the 1650 freestlye and the 800 freestyle relay. In 1984 he would win three more titles in the same three events, for a total of six NAIA National titles in his impressive collegiate career.
