Zenon Smiechowski (pictued far left) coached the SFU track and field and cross country programs for 17 years, beginning in 1982, and he led SFU to 10 NAIA national championships. Under Zenon’s leadership, the women’s cross country team became a dominant program in NAIA, winning five national titles between 1983 and 1998.  
 
The 1998 season was unprecedented in SFU history. The women’s program won the “Triple Crown”, winning NAIA national titles in cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field in the same season.
 
During his career, Zenon earned nine NAIA Coach of the Year awards and coached numerous Canadian champions.  
 
Prior to coaching, Zenon was an NAIA All-American and bronze medalist at the 1979 Pan American Games in the decathlon.
