John McGrane

John McGrane (fifth from left) led SFU to the 1975 NAIA Championship tournament the first year men’s soccer was a varsity program. Despite losing 1-0 to Quincy College in the final, John was selected MVP. 
 
The following season, John led SFU back to the final where it defeated Rockhurst College 1-0 to win the NAIA national championship. While attending SFU, John was selected as a winger for the Canadian national team in Olympic qualifying games. John started two games for Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics and two cycles of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. He earned 17 caps with Canada. 
 
A native of Glasgow, Scotland, John was drafted by the Los Angeles Aztecs of the North American Soccer League. He played nine NASL seasons and is a member of the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame.
