Rob McLaren was a charter member of the SFU football program in 1965 and he was named Male Athlete of the Year in 1967. McLaren, a Vancouver native, was drafted in the first round, second overall, by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 1969 Canadian Football League Draft.

McLaren spent five seasons with the Blue Bombers before playing two years with the Edmonton Eskimos from 1974-76. He then spent one season in Hamilton with the Tiger-Cats before ending his CFL career in 1978 with the BC Lions.
